John Peel 1939 - 2004
John Peel, born John Robert Parker Ravenscoft, has died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 65 in South America. Peel and his wife Sheila were on a working holiday in the city of Cuzco, Peru when he suffered a massive heart attack. He has had a 40 year broadcasting career supporting bands such as The Ramones, The Clash, The Undertones. BBC Radio 1 paid tribute to Peel by playing Teenage Kicks by The Undertones. John Peel often told the story hearing ‘Teenage Kicks’ for the first time. He was driving in his car listening to the song on a demo tape. He was so overcome by the tune that he pulled onto the side of the road to have a cry. John was the first DJ to give exposure to punk, reggae, hip-hop, long before they crossed over into the mainstream. We were introduced to him through the Peel Sessions of various bands. He was respected throughout the music world and will be sadly missed.
