CMJ Day Two - Four

If you attended CMJ last week, you probably nursed your head on Sunday recuperating from the music overload. The line-up may not have been so grand but it was still fun. Last year Aeki Tuesday only went to two shows where we saw 8 or more bands. This year was a bit different. Here's a recap:

CMJ Day One: Suite 16 showcase with Stiffed and Blood Red Sun. Review posted here. We failed to mention that we caught the screening to Team America: World Police. That movie is hilarious and you should see it. There was a Q&A with Matt Stone and Trey Parker at the end of the screening. There's a Michael Moore puppet in Team America and the duo wanted to stress how much they disliked Moore by poking fun of him in the movie.

CMJ Day Two: There were probably lots to do that night but Aeki Tuesday opted to stay home.

CMJ Day Three: We had to take the day off to attend to this Insound.com & AAM showcase at Rothko. Surprisingly, the place was packed. Did everyone else take that day off or leave work early? After the free Rheingold hour was over, The Punks sere next on stage which made us want to drink more to forget that awful display. Experimental noise band or craptastic waste of time? They cleared the entire room. At some point we hoped OCS, a band from the Northwest who covered a Donovan song, would come back on stage again. Mahjongg, a dance punk band from Chicago, had great talent. They were a lovely band to watch, listen and dance to even with the slight lack of lyrics. The surprise of the evening came from Matt Pond PA. Throughout most of the showcase we were hearing how good this band was from various people and they were correct. We can describe Matt Pond PA's music as baroque pop rock creating very lush sounds with wonderful instrumentation. Eric Elbogen from Say Hi To Your Mom has been added as the bassist for their current tour. The headline for the evening was Ted Leo. If you didn't know by know we love Ted Leo and have seen him a few times this year. His new album Shake The Sheets is out now. That day he played songs from the whole album including a few old songs as cause they finished their set early. Afterwards, we ran into Janelle and Coolfer. Later on that night, we attempted to catch Mirah's performance at Sidewalk Cafe on Avenue A but the lines to get in was crazy. Alas, no Mirah that night. Unfortunately, we did have not uploaded pictures of that event but it will be posted by tomorrow morning.

CMJ Day Four: This was one of the longest and best day ever. We picked up our tickets for this Vice party that was happening at Skylight and after lunch with Steven I. Weiss, we were off to Arlene's Grocery for yet another AAM CMJ showcase. The line-up were Prosaics, Saturday Looks Good To Me, The Arcade Fire, Sparta and Q and Not U. We arrive there just as The Arcade Fire were playing and had to wait outside until their set was over. Sparta was good but not as exciting as Q and not U. We may have seen them perform before but since we haven't updated our concert listing since seeing the 5.6.7.8's play at Southpaw in June we are unsure.

Q and not U

We met up with Jen for drinks and karaoke for a bit then headed for the Vice party arriving around 1AM. Apparently two people ahead of us were told no more people would be permitted to enter as the lines were officially closed. We stood back to watch numerous people threatened the security personnel and two females attempted to flash one security guard but he turned down their offer. Fifteen minutes later we were told to form in two lines and would soon be permited to enter. Once inside, I was overtaken by the amount of drunken display. Numerous cans of PBR and Sparks were littering the walkway. The stage was being prepared for the last band of the night. Don't ask us who performed cause we don't remember. We made our rounds from room to room documenting the guests and avoiding Harold Hunter from Kids fame. Behold Vice's Worst Party Ever party.

Unknown Vice Recordings band.

Who tagged this wall with a Loosie sticker?

After that party there was an afterparty and we stumbled home around 6:30AM. We may be getting too old for this but then again we say this every weekend. How was your CMJ experience? What shows did you see or miss?
