Chappelle's Block Party Reunites The Fugees
On September 18th, we attend the best outdoor concert in our lifetime. Due to Hurricane Ivan all trains heading to Manhattan was suspended due to flooding. We finally arrived at the secret location (Pathmark by the Manhattan Bridge in Chinatown) around 10:30 and waited in line for two hours until we were bussed back to Bed-Stuy. Between Classon Ave and Quincy Street, a marching band practiced and immediately thought of "Jesus Walks" by Kanye West. Sporting a fancy gray wristbands, we made our way to the pit and were told that everyone wearing one can come and go as they please. Dave Chappelle, the man with the big plans, came out for picture opportunities along with Common. The show started around 3:00 with Kanye West, John Legend and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, who was managing dual roles that evening as the drummer and Musical Director of the Block Party. Mr. West performed his hits and John Legend performed his single. Common, Mos Def and Freeway performed for a bit. Jill Scott looked absolutely stunning performed a few song from her new album Beautiful Human Vol. 2.
Dead Prez took the stage wanting everyone to Get Free. Erykah Badu made the show come alive singing On & On and Love of My live with Common. We stood covered in a yellow poncho, as Erykah's big fro was knocked of by Ivan's fury. It was quite a sight and Badu kept singing despite of the missing fro. Talib Kweli, Mos Def and Common performed again. It was almost a reunion of Blackstar (Kweli & Mos Def's collaboration). Next up were The Roots who took the show up a notch. The real highlight of their performance was "You Got Me" with Jill Scott and Erykah Badu. It was an amazing sight. Just when we thought the show was over, Dave Chappelle comes out to do his Piss On You song and the remix. Classic!
Then.....Dave gets back on the mic announces that Lauryn Hill was suppose to end the show but issues with Columbia Records wouldn't allow her to perform her songs so she came up with a better idea. The Fugees took the stage and the crowd went berserk. Aeki Tuesday was beyond herself calling and texting just about everyone she knew. Lauryn Hill was on stage along with Praz and Wyclef just like the old times performing countless songs such as Lost Ones, Killing Me Softly With His Song , Fu-ge-la, 'Someone Please Call 911, Ready or Not and more. It was the best night ever. EVER! No cameras were allowed so we couldn't document anything but you can find images here taken by acamera phone digital camera. Click here for Kelefa Sanneh's review the Block Party.
The show ended around 10PM after Cody Chesnutt, Jean Grae and others participated at the ending cyper. Afterwards with sore legs and half-starved, we made the 10 minute trek home. Lets hope Michel Gondry will release the dvd of this event sometime early next year.
