R.E.M., Badly Drawn Boy And Others Offer Aid To Sudanese Refugees / Backer's Back
Songs for Sudan, the 14-track set, which features tracks from R.E.M., David Gray, Jet, Badly Drawn Boy, Faithless and Ash, is available now via download at BigNoiseMusic.com (launched by Oxfam) to raise money for various causes. Proceeds from the compilation will go to the people of Darfur, who were forced from their homes due to major military conflict. Rebel militant groups took up arms in February 2003 in response to alleged discrimination by the Khartoum government, and began ravaging Darfur villages and homes, either killing the residents or forcing them from their homes. About 50,000 Darfur people are estimated dead and more than one million people have become stricken refugees. Basically this is genocide. Read more about the situation in Sudan here and here
After 10 years of being away from the music scene, Anita Baker returns with My Everything. The 46-year-old has signed to Blue Note after leaving Elektra two years ago due to creative differences and couldn't be happier. My Everything is the latest in a series of new releases by veteran female R&B singers. That list includes such icons as Teena Marie, Patti LaBelle, Stephanie Mills and Regina Belle, all of whose recent albums have been well-received. Her album features collaborations with producer Barry Eastmond and singer Kenneth Babyface Edmonds. Baker single, "You're My Everything," the first single from the album, is No. 1 on Billboard's Adult R&B chart.
