Tomfoolery Weekend

I had planned to do more CMJ activities this year but laziness always gets the best of me. Plus I have read horror stories from people who have vowed "never again!!" to CMJ year after year but they always get suckered in. I didn't do any big names this year. There were amazing shows at the Bowery Ballroom, Knitting Factory, Irving Plaza and Pianos. Instead I went to Lit and Luxx. The lineup for Saturday's shenanigan was to go to the Insound/'Sup Mag/Cliktrax party from 3:30 - 7:30pm, attend the Ace Fu Records party afterwards with Candice and then go to Luxx for the Kill Rock Stars show . Everything went as planned. The free beers and pizza were enticing. I ran into Cameron during the first party. We conversed mostly about how tiresome the whole CMJ deal has been and wished to take power naps in between events. The bands that played the first show were Vietnam, Hominid, Oil, Dance Disaster Movement. I really like Vietnam's sound. Excellent. The other bands were a little sub par. The music was either very good but the singing horrendous or vice versa. Vietnam was the only band that incorporated the qualities of singing and music bringing forth an opulent sound.

The next show was the Ace Fu Records showcase. The lineup were An Albatross, Aqui, Office May, Soundtrak, The Eaves, and Man Man. Noteworthy performances of that night were Man Man (formerly Magic Blood), The Eaves and Soundtrack. I remember seeing Man Man back in Philly for Ladyfest. I'd say they've come a long way from that show. Soundtrak has a good following of fans. There were so many hipster folks swooning over these boys. I did admire from a far rather than swoon. By that time it was almost 11 so Candice and I decided to leave. I stopped by a party her friend was throwing for a little bit . We got a sneak peek at his costume for halloween which is sure to garner him attention from both sexes. I left for Luxx just in time to catch Jeff Hanson's set. I cheered on while half standing half sleeping. The cigarette smoke didn't help and I feared getting more alcohol would only make more exhausted. Have I mentioned how the Decemberists are a fun group to see? Very enjoyable. Go see them people. Around 2 am, I leave the show. In about one hour daylight savings was going to take place and I did not have a place to crash for the night. Sucks. Waiting for the 5:14 train at Penn Station was the last thing I wanted to do but I did it. The comical event of the night was seeing the time turn back from 2:59am to 1:59am. Ha Ha... Sucks! How did all of you CMJ folks do it without passing out? Seriously.
