Annie @ Hiro 06.28.05
The MisShapes DJs held the crowd's attention for a while. This was the second time we attended an event where they DJed. They played a mix of Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party, Scissor Sisters, M.I.A and the new Missy Elliott single. Though visually they were stunning, their set could describe as grimy (not to be confused as grime sensation that's taking over the UK). We will just leave it at that.
By 12 we wanted to leave. Then Annie's DJ/Producer comes out. He made several noticeable errors setting up songs he was going to play. Finally Annie comes out, the crowd wakes up. Annie has microphone issues. "We can't hear you," someone shouts. She continues to sing through the very loud bass. It was only her and her DJ. He was really into what he was doing to notice that she couldnt' be heard. Annie trooped on. Annie has been described as Kylie Minogue. Yes, in voice only. Annie's stage presence doesn't come close to Kylie's.
We're not sure if there wasn't enough planning about how Annie's music will translate on stage or maybe Annie had stage fright but her performance was not good last night. Nevertheless, wasn't there someone else whose performance was thought as being subpar. Annie's CD is fabulous though.
