Hotness In The Blogsphere

Jay over at Hiphopmusic.com provided the news of MC Hammer coming back in Full Blast attacking Eminem and Busta Rhymes. He raps about his return to the scene saying he never really left but was standing on the sidelines watching other artists call themselves rappers. His lyrics say he is the ultimate rapper because he has accomplished much more and he’s about rapping and dancing. Okay, moving on.

So RY RY told NME that he could have been paralyzed after he fell of stage in an interview on Jan. 25th.

"They said it'll take at least six weeks or two months. That's for the bones to take. They might have to wire it together with metal wires. The guess now is that I could lose up to 20 per cent of the mobility in my wrist. That's the percentage I won?t be able to bend it any more. My fingers and hand will be fine but I'll have to re-train my wrist. We'll see about guitar but it might make me a great piano player! I have a feeling I'll be able to pull through. It's all about making sure I can get my wrist about a guitar."

We get the impression that Ry Ry is a bit of whinner not just because he effed up his hand and boo hoo hoo hoo but because of this voicemail message to Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun Times that Scott Stereogum posted on his site earlier this month.

Dr. Dre gets the boot from Power 105 but Ed Lover stays. (link via Hiphopmusic). They already took off Dre's info off of their site. Ouch!

Belle & Sebastian have created their very own computer game to celebrate the release of their next single 'I'M A CUCKOO'. Play the game here and you might win a chance to see them play live in Barcelona.

New sites to peep at:
  • Electablog: Campaign News with all the Carbs. Electablog.com provides a daily overview (links and analysis) of the mad dash that is America's election cycle.

  • Sandbox Automatic - the largest hip-hop online store on the east coast.

We got this email just the other day:

Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2004 00:51:24 -0500
To: palemoon22@yahoo.com
From: xxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com Add to Address Book
Subject: a question

why don't you ever post pictures of yourself???!!! i bet you're hot!
love your site, though ;)

Well, it's not like there's a whole anonymity issue cause our Friendster profile is already linked on this site. We are happy to be the ones taking pictures rather than the subject. The Blueprint (She's a celebrity now, don't ya know), Ultragrrrl, SaucyDame and Melody Nelson has already filled the blogsphere quota of hotness but thanks.

Soul Clapping

Over the bridge and through the woods, to an 8-5 job we go. We were skipping and clapping all while steady laughing as we fell on our cheeks in the snow. (date: 01.28.04)

NYC Subway Centennial. Celebrating (link via Gothamist) The subway opened on October 27, 1904, from City Hall to Harlem where 150,000 people paid a nickel each to ride. The New York City subway, operated by MTA New York City Transit, is the largest subway system in North America, moving over 4.5 million customers each day, in 6,400 train cars, over 656 miles of subway track, to 468 stations, on 26 train lines.

Kelefa Sanneh reviews last week's Slick Rick show at the Knitting Factory and The Crusade has images of his performance. Slick has another show coming up at Southpaw on Feb. 20th with DJ Evil Dee, Soul Purpose and Theodore Unit.

Von Bondies bassist, Carrie Smith pleads for Jack White to get some help: "I hope Jack White gets help. He's not a very happy person." Von Bondies will be touring in NY on Feb. 25th @ the Bowery Ballroom.

Jean Grae airs it out on an Allhiphop.com exclusive. She's frustrated of having to explain herself, mad at XXL for misquoting her, and just tired of being overlooked and underpaid.

Buddyhead's Best/worst of 2003 gave us a good laugh this morning. On TV on the Radio's Young Liars EP they had this to say:

We went and saw these dudes, and they slayed. The bass player looked like he was in N.W.A and had learned to play bass the day before, one of the guitar players looked like Omar from The Mars Volta after a month long Krispy Kreme binge, and everybody had fire shooting out of the ends of their hands. It ruled. Their album rules too, but doesn't "officially" come out til this year, so we put the e.p. on here. Boo yah.

Papa & Yayo in the Slamo (Halle's okay though)

Soul singer James Brown (link) was arrested Wednesday on domestic violence charges, authorities said.

Brown, 70, was booked into the county jail and was to appear at a bond hearing, said jail supervisor Nicholas Gallam.

Brown, who lives in South Carolina, served a 2?-year prison term after a 1988 arrest on drug and assault charges and was convicted of a drug-related offence in 1998. He was granted a pardon by the state in May.

Known as the Godfather of Soul, Brown was honoured last month at the Kennedy Center as "one of the most influential musicians of the past 50 years."

Forged Passport Sent G-Unit's Tony Yayo Back To Prison. One word: I D I O T I C

Halle is just fine after Catwoman incident. So, yeah they're still going to make that movie. You sure Wesley Snipes wasn't on the set that day??

AZZIP NEPO!

Kanye West's album, The College Blackout, has been floating around for a little over a month now. It's been shared and burned. We got ourself a copy last December. The tracks are tight and will be reviewed soon! Kanye West anticipated as much and re-recorded the LP and adding new tracks for it's Feb. 10th release date. On a BBC Radio interview, West stated that 'The Good, The Bad, The Ugly', 'My Way', 'Home' and 'Keep The Receipt' will not be included on the album. Also, changes were made to other tracks including 'All Falls Down' (aka 'Self Conscious') which had features a sample from Lauryn Hill but will now feature Syleena Johnson, 'Never Let Me Down' will feature a few verses from Jay-Z, and new tracks with Common and Talib Kweli on 'We Don't Care'.

Listen to the BBC Radio interview of Kanye West

Another anticipated album of 2004 that will leave our toes curled is Madvillain's (collaboration of Madlib and MF Doom) Madvillainy which drops on March 23rd.

Madlib and Beat Junkie J-Rocc will be on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Radio Show on BBC's Radio 1 today. For more check out: www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/urban/peterson... (via Hip Hop Dx)

Many of you might be aware that Melissa Auf de Maur, former Smashing Pumpkins and Hole member, will be releasing an album, Auf de Maur on April 4th. NME just announced that she will be performing at the NME Awards on Feb. 16th. She is currently on tour in the UK with A Perfect Circle.

Yo, Spaulding Gray IS still missing! We sort of feel bad that we were laughing when we saw his kid dancing to a cheesy song a while back at the Trailer Park Lounge. The kid was the only one in the room dancing but we were laughing with him not at him.

Very excited about the new Magnetic Fields record in May. According to the Stephen Merritt website:

The new album, currently entitled i will see Merritt once again colloborating with his 69 Love Songs pals. The album, the band's first for Nonesuch (home to Laurie Anderson, Compay Segundo, and Wilco) will feature 14 songs all beginning with the letter "i". Merritt sings all the songs on the album and will be accompanied by John Woo, Claudia Gonson, and Sam Davol. The band is also in the planning stages of a summer tour, which will see the foursome fanning across the U.S. in late April, May, June, and July in support of i.

Rolling Stone reports on the new Ben Kweller album, On My Way. It will be primed for released on April 6th.

Kweller had this to say about the recording:"So my album was recorded in a mid-Sixties fashion. We were all in one room, with no separation between amplifiers and drums. Usually you can mix everything how you want in your headphones. But a lot of times people end up just listening to themselves and making sure they're playing their part perfectly. So we brought it back to pure old school recording." He will be touring with Death Cab For Cutie this fall. NY Tour Dates: April 6-8 @ Irving Plaza.

When is this coming to the east coast??

Let's Start This Out Right

Must have been that 'Milkshake' song playing in the background at the Slick Rick/Hollertronix party last Friday cause these people wouldn't stop dancing. We wouldn't stop dancing either even when the DJ started playing 'Hey Ya!' We finally were introduced to Nick Catchdubs who was celebrating his birthday. This Kid showed up and set to make moves on most of the females there. Not so completely bummed by the lack of Barcardi (none at all) but shots of Kamikazes and Soko & Lime are an equal fix.

We ran into Candice who did not want her picture taken as you can tell by the face she was giving us.

Yum-Yum Goodness

This local shop in Jersey offers Philly Style Cheesesteaks. Don't even front people cause we all know NO ONE can make a Philly Cheesesteak nowhere but Philly. We still enjoyed their Italian Style Hot Dogs though. Speaking of which, we need to make another trip to PA soon.

Poor Ry Ry (aka Ryan Adams who shall henceforth be named Ry Ry) suffers from a suspected broken wrist after falling six feet offstage at the Liverpool Royal Court. Ry Ry was a trooper and tried to continue his show but the pain was too unbearable.

Nets Bidzness

The Brooklyn Nets? Yesterday Bruce Ratner and his team (Jay-Z's bling bling is everywhere) purchased the Nets for $300 million. He beat out an offer of about $267.5 million by developer Charles Kushner and U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine, who sought to keep the Nets in New Jersey. This is a very big lost for New Jersey. Ratner's plan is to move this franchise to an arena in a $2.5 billion commercial and residential project in downtown Brooklyn. If everything comes together, Ratner has said, construction on the stadium would begin next year and the arena would be ready for the 2006-07 season. This is good buzz for NY but not for Jersey. Franchise stealers!

Tijuana Lady

Image of Gomez at last night's show at Irving Plaza. Thanks in part to the wonderful folks at What's Up NYC, we were able to bypass the $100 scalping prices of the sold out show. A lady by the name of Rachael Yamagata, enchanted us before Gomez took the stage, with her husky, low melodious hooks. Whether it was singing about a lost love, a possible blonde girl who took her love away or a crush on a married man while in a relationship with said lost love, she is a definite artist to watch and don't confuse her for your typical brunette playing piano chick. She also rocks on guitar. Listen to Collide MP3 / Under My Skin MP3 / Worn Me Down MP3. More photos will be posted here tomorrow.

XL and Matador had several listening parties set up for Dizzee Rascal in NYC, CA, FL and DC but Dizzee will be playing his first ever North American shows next month. He's Brooklyn bound on Feb 07 @ Volume and all you cats in Toronto can catch him @ the Mod Club on Feb 05. The US release of Boy In Da Corner is out today, January 20th.

"This one feels grounded, like hanging out on someone's Chicago sidewalk," Common said recently. "After going way out, it's a natural progression for me to come home again. It's more about people and things relative to life." Common talks about his upcoming album, Be. He also credits Ahmir Thompson (?uestlove) for turning around his career. "He enhanced my music and my thirst for music. Ahmir is a genius, man. He took my music to a higher level."

The Cure will be playing the second night of Coachella. This might be one of the few reasons why this site would envy the west coast.

Blonde Redhead has signed to the 4AD roster. Their latest album, Misery is a Butterfly, will be released March 9th. Listen to Misery is a Butterfly MP3.

Ghostface Killah on set of his "Run" video with Jadakiss. He goes on to explain that "Run" is just the street single to his upcoming album, Pretty Tony. The real single is "Toosh" with Missy Elliott. Ghost explains the collaboration with Missy: "As soon as I heard the beat, I heard her on it, so I wrote my part with her in mind. She was hard to get to. You know Missy is busy. I had to leave a message on one of her girlfriends' phones. 'Yo, all I want her to do is listen to it. If she don't like it, she don't gotta mess with it. Just hear it for me, please.' She fell in love with it when she heard it. She had her verse the next day."

Whoa, Foxy Jess made Black List this week!!

Orgies and Rhymes

That image was taken yesterday while going home from work. Who ever is in charge of the marquee at this theater is neglecting their duties. There's a movie called PE??

1115.org asked us to participate in Guilty Pleasures where we would spill our deepest darkest secrets. Well it's been done. Be warned and read on.

America's Next Top Model orgy? "There's eight people making out at the same time kinda in the same vicinity, I don't want to say orgy - but I just said it." Tyra Banks told Conan O'Brien on his show. "My girls on the show were doing the nasty." UPN officials said some footage of the orgy will be included in the show, as it is part of the story. But they declined to say when the episode will air or any details of who was involved other than four contestants and four unidentified men. Meanwhile, CSI is New York bound. Get ready for another CSI series on CBS.

DMC's long-delayed album, Checks, Thugs, and Rock 'n' Roll, is due this spring which features Sarah McLachlan no less. "She's like my favorite artist of all time," he said. "Her music changes people. I called her up and she said yeah. A lot of people in the business be frontin'; they don't call you back. She called me back and we made the record. She's real." In The News: Martin Luther King Jr Day

Tens of thousands of people turned out in near freezing temperatures to take part in the annual three-mile march to honor the words and deeds of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., in San Antonio, TX.

Martin Luther King, III, (L), Coretta Scott King (C), wife of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. and Christine King Farris (R), sister of Martin Luther King, Jr., hold hands as they sing 'We Shall Overcome' to end the 36th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Service in Atlanta.

A sign quoting Martin Luther King Jr. is lifted a above the crowd in front of the Texas Capitol, in Austin, Texas. About 1500 people gathered to celebrate the birthday of the slain civil rights leader.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This is our hope. This is the faith with which I return to the South. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

The BAFTA nominations were announced and "Cold Mountain" leads the pack. Best Picture nominations includes: Big Fish, Cold Mountain, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Lost in Translation and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Last year's BAFTA best picture winner was Holocaust film "The Pianist." Scarlett Johansson snagged not one but two nominations for Best actress in a leading role in "Lost in Translation" and "Girl with the Pearl Earring". Here she is at the Venice 2003 - Lost In Translation - Premiere. We are hoping that the blonde locks are for new role not that she doesn't look bad but she is more believable in her natural color.

"I'm so tired of hearing casting directors ask if I have a sore throat. The people who have told me that my voice is distinctive, it's unusual...those people have always been close to my heart."

Were we the only ones wondering what happened to her signature old lady smocked 500 pack of cigarette in a day voice in Lost In Translation?

Can Alec Baldwin really loose 30 pounds for role as flamboyant fashion designer Halston? We'll believe it when we see it. Cause Alec likes his food. Also, NY Post reports that Alec is to have very very gay sex with a man. Gasp! Could it be that Alec Baldwin has gone a full 180 turn from homophobia? We'll believe it when we see it, Alec.

It's On...Oh, It's So On

Last night was the premiere episode of America's Next Top Model 2. As reality shows goes, this one is the cat's meow. Why? Because it's one of those guilty pleasures of life. After the very first installment of ANTM, this site gave the show an F but later realized how wrong we were. So wrong. The Gia-esque Chicago-drawl waitress, Adrianne, ended up winning the top prize and we automatically developed a love/hate relationship with the very-pointy-eyebrows wonder that is Janice Dickinson.

ANTM2 has the girls thrown on the runway of the USS Intrepid where Tyra Banks informs them "I'm throwing you straight on a runway with no training, no nothing. I want to see what you got." The girls had 30 minutes to prepare for hair and makeup. April screwed up by putting on her second outfit. Jenascia came to the rescue and wonders where the Marines keep their food cause she's starving. Jay Alexander, who walks better in heels than Heidi Klum on crack, quickly let the girls know that they "suck" after their runway show. Jay gives them their key of the new hip Manhattan pad. We are taken to their living quarters which includes a bling bling, mod and punk-funk room. Camille throws catty glances at Yoanna for stealing toilet paper at Tavern on the Green.

Their next task was to wake up early for a photo shoot but Jenascia slept like a baby while the rest of the girls got ready. April feels bad and cries again because Jenascia is still asleep while the girls are taken to their destination. The photo shoot would have them covered in elaborate body paint whilst being naked. "Nudity's great! I'm all about it!" squeals Xiamara. Anna would not have it since she is married and has a child so Nigel (the photographer) kicks her off the set. After many calls to the bling blinb pad, Jenascia finally wakes up and wants revenge. Yeah, those bitches are gonna pay! She forgets that it's a competition not a sorority as Tyra will tell her later. At the end, the judges decided to eliminate Anna while Jenascia determines a best strategem that will produce the most damage. This is how we do it in the OC bitch! Wait...wrong show. Speaking of the OC, it's on tonight. Sandy and Jimmy decide to go into business together; Caleb shuts off Haley's cash flow, putting her out of business; Seth and Anna bond over being single.

Simply Irresistible

Excellent show last night. Is it possible to fall in love while listening to Rilo Kiley play? Yes, it is very possible. Jenny and Blake played a few new songs, a cover of Robert Palmer's Simply Irresistible and some choice songs from their previous albums. Below are some images of their set. You can also go here or here for more.
