We have been following news of the events in Haiti closely but haven't posted anything about it here. Haiti's turned upside down as rebels seized control Cap-Haitien, Haiti's second largest city. Their goal is to ultimately get rid of President Aristide and his supporters. Ten years ago, the United States sent 20,000 troops to end a military dictatorship that had ousted Aristide in 1991, a year after he became Haiti's first freely elected leader. Aristide made lots of promises he couldn't keep which prompted these recent events according to the rebels. In Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, 50 marines arrived Monday afternoon to secure the United States Embassy. Louis-Jodel Chamblain, leader of the rebel troops, said "This fight is to liberate the Haitian people under the regime of Jean-Bertrand Aristide." This disillusionment has cause much chaos in Haiti. The rebels now have until 5pm today to consider a
peace plan presented by the Bush administration and its allies. A good site that's been doing a much better job at this than we are is
Haiti Pundit.
