Forgoing the Altman-like voluptuousness (e.g. huge ensemble casts and lengthy run-times) that typically characterizes his films, director PT Anderson struck out into new territory with 2002's Punch-Drunk Love. It's a tighter, brighter, smaller-scale piece, both an homage and a reimagination of the classic romantic comedy — with Adam Sandler and Emily Watson mugging as a kind of Cary Grant/Audrey Hepburn duo. With little to no exposition, we are plunged headlong into the herky-jerky narrative of this manic-depressively charming love story. Fortunately, when you emerge woozy and disoriented from this technicolor rollercoaster, Mr. Anderson himself and cast member Philip Seymour Hoffman are present to smack some sense into you and answer questions.
