Where Oh Where Is Nellie McKay?
This very question was on our mind late November. Nellie McKay was busy polishing her sophomore album, 'Pretty Little Head', pulling the likes of Cyndi Lauper and K.D. Lang as special guests. The singer-songwriter, whose 2004 album, 'Get Away From Me', was a breakout hit, is in a dispute with Columbia Records, which is owned by Sony BMG. 'Pretty Little Head' slated for a late December release was pushed to the first week of January but Columbia decided to dropped her because of lenght? McKay said Columbia dropped her and decided not to distribute her sophomore album. McKay had pressed for a 23-song, 65-minute version, while Columbia wanted a 16-song, 48-minute cut. (Yahoo News).
'Pretty Little Head' had already been supplied to the press, drawing very positive reviews from Spin and Blender magazines. McKay has contributed six new songs to the soundtrack of the recently released Rob Reiner film, "Rumor Has It ..." (Download it at iTunes.)
She will co-star with Alan Cumming, Cyndi Lauper and Ana Gasteyer in the musical "The Threepenny Opera," opening on Broadway in March. In a statement to Reuters, McKay simply said that "Sources are hopeful that Pretty Little Head will be released in early 2006." She's not lost but slightly disheveled.
